Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs taken by Emily Cassel as part of her work for Scout Cambridge and Scout Somerville. The photographs were taken by Cassel between 2015 and 2017, with the photos appearing in printed Scout publications from the May/June 2015 issue through the May/June 2017 issue, the most recent issue at the time of donation. Seventeen of the photos also appeared in single articles posted on the Scout’s website. Additionally, one photo was taken for an article but was not chosen to be published. The photos were all taken at various spots around Cambridge. The first series focuses on owners and chefs of locally-owned Cambridge restaurants. The second series focuses on small businesses, including retail, entertainment, fitness, and services. The subjects of the photos are mostly owners or employees. The third series includes a variety of not-for-profit organizations--mostly the individuals associated with them--as well as several individual artists.

Biographical / Historical

Emily Cassel is a Boston-based journalist who has been with the hyperlocal publications Scout Somerville and Scout Cambridge since September 2014, and editor in chief since September 2015. She received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northeastern University in Boston in 2012 and has written or freelanced for several organizations in the area, including The Huntington News, OurStage.com, Under the Gun Review, Tastemakers, Boston Globe Media, Bitch Media, and Tom Tom Magazine.
